About this event

FUNGI & FIRE: Autumnal Mushroom Identification & Woodland Sauna

I’m Courtney Tyler, and I invite you to join me for an immersive autumn day in the Wicklow hills and woodlands of Laragh. Together, we’ll explore the rich world of wild fungi and learn practical tips to help you safely begin your mushroom foraging journey. During our walk, our goal will be to find at least one edible, one medicinal, and one toxic or deadly species in the wild, while discussing their unique properties and key identification features.

As a takeaway, I’ll be sharing a custom zine and special notes I’ve prepared, packed with recipes, book recommendations, and useful links so you can keep learning at home.

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Guided 2-hour forest mushroom identification walk.

12:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Fireside lunch, Q&A, and relaxation.

About Courtney:
I live in County Wicklow and am happiest surrounded by trees, observing the changing seasons, and exploring our local hedgerows and forests for wild food and medicine.

I am a proud member of The Association of Foragers. While I am not a formal mycologist, I have safely foraged, processed, and consumed more than 100 species of wild mushrooms as food and natural remedies. I focus heavily on safety and sustainability, making sure you know exactly how to stay safe and enhance your health with wild foods. Over the years, I have extensive experience processing wild plants and fungi into food, herbal tinctures, teas, and salves, and I love passing on this practical, hard-won knowledge.

I am largely self-taught through years of dedicated study (and a constantly growing stack of mushroom books!), alongside guidance from many skilled and wonderful mentors. I have also completed a Forest Bathing Certification through Wicklow Partnership and Leader funding, and sometimes will offer a forest bathing or nature connection invitation during some of my walks, depending upon the abundance of fungi in the forest and the weather on that exact day.
